Psalm 2:1-6

“Why do the nations conspire, and the peoples plot in vain?” vs. 1

When seen from space our world is a thing of beauty, a blue sphere moving in its assigned orbit around the sun, splendid in its own way, a jewel among the billions of heavenly bodies. And it’s where we live! On its surface are billions of people, all having been given the precious gift of life, all living out a brief moment of time, all seeking love, all having basic needs for food, water, and shelter. And amazingly enough, our planet has been equipped with plenty of resources, enough for all people to have a good life. It sounds like paradise…in the words of our scripture, “it is very good!” So what do we do? Well, we’ve pretty much made a mess of things. Nations conspire and the peoples plot! There are wars and genocides, power struggles, starvation and poverty, and it all seems so foolish. We imagine ourselves to be masters of the universe. We can’t even run our own little planet. Thousands of years ago the psalmist noticed the problem and asked “Why?” That question still plagues our hearts and minds. We’d like to say we’re making progress but in the last 100 years millions of men, women, and children have been slaughtered in senseless conflict. We seem to only be getting better at killing each other. Is there hope for us? When God is patient and humans live humbly miracles can happen…and that’s our hope!

Thought for the Day: What can I do to make a difference?
