Psalm 122:6-9

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls, and security within your towers.’” vss. 6-7

We have grown accustomed to hearing stories of terror and division coming from Jerusalem, tales of riots, shooting, and suicide bombings. With that as a backdrop it’s more than ironic that the word, “Jerusalem” means “city of peace.” The pilgrims of ancient days knew that and fervently offered prayers that the city would live up to its name, that there would be peace within her walls and security for all who came to worship. Given the current situation it is more than appropriate to continue those prayers. Three great world religions have strong connections within the towers of Jerusalem’s walls. For Jews it is the site of their ancient temple, the holiest place on earth, the navel of the universe. For Muslims it has the Dome of the Rock, perhaps their most ancient shrine, the spot from which Mohammed ascended during his night journey into heaven. For Christians it contains the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the place where Jesus died and was buried. For centuries pilgrims from all over the world have flocked to those holy places to offer prayers and seek inspiration. During the best of times those believers have treated one another with dignity and respect, but there have also been horrible clashes and countless murders. These days there is much uncertainty and prayers for peace have never been needed more.
