Isaiah 35:1-4
“The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing.” vss. 1-2
Those who live in places where rain falls freely can’t imagine the beauty of the blossoming desert. For them deserts are barren and inhospitable places dominated by thorny plants and bushes. It isn’t where they would go to catch a glimpse of joy. They don’t know that after the winter rains every cactus and thorny bush blooms and the landscape is transformed. And the flowers are spectacular; their colors bright and vibrant, every one a delight to the eye! That’s what it will be like, Isaiah says, when God comes to rescue those living in exile and despair. Nature itself will get into the act and celebrate God’s coming with singing and joy. Sometimes we get so preoccupied with our human stuff that we miss the celebratory beauty of the surrounding natural world. There are so many neat things to see and enjoy: snow-bedecked pines in northern backyards; bouganvillas flaunting their carmine blooms; bright red poinsettias begging to be purchased. Such sights are soothing to our souls, a gentle reminder to slow down and smell the roses. No matter how isolated or alone we might feel, God has not forgotten us. God will strengthen us in our weakness and provide guidance on the way…and there will be ample opportunities to rejoice and give praise…and enjoy the beauty of life!
