Matthew 10:24-39

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father…So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.” vss. 29-31

When Jesus sent out the newly chosen disciples to expand his mission in Galilee he didn’t pull any punches.. The religious leaders had been hostile to him and he rightly anticipated that they wouldn’t be any kinder to the Twelve. To comfort them he tells them not to worry or be afraid. They would not be abandoned by God. In fact, God would be closer to them than the hairs of their heads!

While it’s unlikely that any of us will be mistreated because we’re walking in the way of Jesus, it’s still good to know that we are not alone in life. We are not a set of solitary individuals wandering aimlessly with no connection to anyone or anything until the day we die. Rather, each one of us is immersed in the loving and sustaining presence of the Divine, even when we are not aware of it.

In fact, to be alive is to be connected! Not only to God but to one another. Humanity is like one giant organism that has spread through the entire world. Like a grove of aspen trees on a mountain meadow, we appear as individuals, but we’re tied together by an unseen complex of root systems. All are One! And God is in All!

Thought for the Day: How am I like everyone else?
