Jeremiah 28:5-9

“As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.” vs. 9

There were other prophets in Jerusalem at the time of Jeremiah, all claiming to have a word from the Lord for the people. One of them, Hananiah proclaimed that within two years the yoke of Babylon would be broken and the exiles and the temple treasures would return to Jerusalem. Jeremiah in essence told him, “Good, I hope that happens too, but history is against it. The prophets of old consistently said there would be consequences for disobedience. Only if your word comes true can we know that you have been sent from the Lord.”

Of course the king preferred the prophecy of Hananiah. That’s always the way it is with political leaders. They close their ears to those forecasting disasters and love the advisors who say that current policies are going to reap enormous benefits. But as Jeremiah said, the proof is in the pudding. That’s the frustrating part. Even though we might think there are problems ahead for our nation, we have to wait. Only time can reveal the truth!

In the meantime we focus on those things which make a difference to those we have been called to serve. We keep on being advocates for the poor and the needy. We stand up for refugees and the hungry. And bit by bit the kingdom of peace will be revealed!

Thought for the Day: What do I do when I can’t change things?
