Psalm 46:4-11
“Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.” vs. 10
Some days all of the political conversation and incessant campaign advertisements are almost too much to bear. We know in our hearts that nearly all of the claims and accusations we’re seeing and hearing are distortions and outright lies, and yet the ones we agree with resonate in our hearts. We like hearing the falsehoods when they demean our least preferred candidates. That’s really not something to be proud of but it’s deeply embedded in our brokenness.
So what shall we do as the election approaches? The psalmist advises us to be still and know that God is God. And it’s not a bad recommendation. The truth is that no candidate is a panacea for all that ails in our culture and society. We will continue to see brokenness on all sides–but we will also see flashes of goodness. God, who brought all things into existence, and who sustains life on this lovely and beautiful planet, is not going to abandon us. We are never going to be left alone.
That is good news worth hanging on to when times are troubling. Martin Luther wrote in A Mighty Fortress is Our God, “God himself fights by our side, with weapons of the Spirit…(our enemies) cannot win the day, the Kingdom’s ours forever.”
“Be still and know that I am God!” It’s good advice for every generation.
Thought for the Day: What good news am I hanging on to?
