Amos 5:21-24

“But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” vs. 24

It’s hard to believe but election day is finally here. Those who have not voted by mail will be flocking to the polls to cast their ballots, not always an easy matter when there are propositions and judges to be considered! For some this is an exciting day, and they’ll be staying up late to check the returns, sometimes into the early morning hours.

Others are just glad that the endless pleas for contributions and the steady stream of obnoxious television and social media ads are finally over. One thing is sure: when returns are complete and the final results are in, there will be both rejoicing and lamenting, and a few will likely announce their desire to move out of the country. There might even be some who dare to hope that this will be the moment that Amos saw for Israel, a time when “justice would roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”

The problem is that a change in politicians is hardly a guarantee that change will be coming. In a corrupt system that favors the wealthy justice is weaponized and righteousness  perverted. Mercy is made available for a bribe and religion becomes a tool of the state.

But we can’t stop hoping and we certainly can’t stop praying. There is goodness in the DNA of every person, and the Holy Spirit is a powerful ally. The mighty will fall and the poor will be lifted up.

Thought for the Day: Where am I seeing goodness today?
